Mac / windows printing?

I have a macbook with parallels and windows. when i try printing from a windows platform program it won't print. I have to print to pdf, close windows then print from OSX. likewise when windows is open and i try printing from a osx based program it won't print. But when I close windows I can print. I would like to print in both platforms as one would think it should. Any ideas? Thanks.
